The HEC Homestay Program
What is the Homestay program?
The Homestay program allows visitors to Nepal to stay with families in
Kathmandu. The Homestay participant lives with the family -- sleeping
in a Nepali home, taking their meals with the family, and maybe even touring
the city or celebrating a holiday or birthday with them. The program provides
a unique opportunity to learn about Nepali culture, make new friends and
extended family, and provide direct assistance to the Nepali people, many
of whom are saving for their childrens future education.
How does it work?
The program was designed by Home in Nepal, and is managed from the HEC
Clubhouse in Kathmandu. The HEC keeps a file of families that have extra
space in their homes, and would like to rent them to visitors to Nepal.
We have information about the number of bedrooms, bathrooms, family members,
and even smoking and vegetarian preferences.
In addition, each family has been trained on how to accommodate guests.
They will offer the guest two meals a day, have boiled water available
for drinking, and keep clean sheets on the bed.
What is required of the visitor?
Visitors are requested to act as respectful guests. This means being home
by 10:00 PM, not bringing guests into the house without the families permission,
not engaging in illegal activities on the family property, keeping the
area clean, etc.
How do I participate?
Contact the HEC Boulder office by info@hec.org
or telephone (303-998-0101) and we can make reservations in advance. You
can also visit the Clubhouse and go through the files on the families.
We do also request that you join the Himalayan Explorers Club.
What does it cost?
The price varies by the family (depending on the home), but most homes
are about $3 to $7 a day (this includes 2 meals). All of this money goes
directly to the family
